Environmental Education Programs

  “Adaptations are the Keys to Survival”  This hands on program examines structural, behavioral, instinctive, and protective adaptations.

 

 “Awesome Arachnids”  Learn about those 8-legged wonders in our hands-on style using                             spider puppets, models, books. No live specimens.

 “Bats in the Belfry” Bats are another maligned member of the ecosystem. This program promotes the importance of bats in our  backyards while studying bat adaptations, echolocation etc.

  “Beach in the Bag” Investigation   & discovery of animals from our Estuary.  Each student               works with his own bag  of shells to reinforce identification.

 

Bird Programs :

 

  “Beaks and Feet”  How do birds’ beaks and feet adapt to their environment?  Complete a hands-on experiment matching beaks with food sources available.

 

                             “What is a Bird?”  How does the shape of a bird’s wing affect it’s lifestyle?  Learn what makes a bird a bird. 

 

 

            

 

  “The Enviroscape” is an exciting visual and hands-on method for teaching students about point and non-point source pollution within a watershed! Students apply pesticides, chemicals, litter and other pollutants to a pristine environment (model of a community watershed) and follow the path of  pollutants.

“Water-Our Liquid Treasure”, the Ground Water Model is a program designed to show the mysteries of groundwater flow– where our water comes from, and how it moves underground.  Learn how water may become contaminated and what we can do to prevent it. (See “What’s Hot” above.)

  “Hair—What’s it Fur? ”  Mammals are all wrapped up in it.   It keeps out the cold, changes with the seasons, & sends not-so-secret messages.  Find out interesting facts about hair.

 “Horns or Antlers—What’s the Point?” What are horns?  What are antlers?  What’s the difference?  Who’s got them?  And...just what are these “head” ornaments used for anyway? Perfect holiday program!

 

 

K-1 Interactive Books   Schedule us to bring one of our interactive books and live critters from the Lowcounty Estuarium to your students. Pre-K & 1st.

 “Trees are Important to People and Wildlife”  Variety of age appropriate programs and activities to teach your students about the ways trees are vital to people and wildlife.  Great to use with Arbor Day plans!

South Carolina Arbor Day is the 1st Friday in December.

 

  “What Tale Does the Tail Tell?” Animals of all kinds use their tails to give signals about how they are feeling.  Tails have been adapted to specific purposes.  Students will be   challenged to discover the tale of each tail.

 

 

 “Cargo for Conservation” This program on  Endangered Species uses a US Fish & Wildlife kit containing products made from endangered species.  It also teaches your students about extinction, habitat loss and what they can do to help.

 

  “Brr...It’s Cold Outside!”  What’s happening                                                        at the North & South Poles?                                                       Who lives there, anyway?                                                           Join us on our journey.                                                       Pre-K-2nd.

 

   “Sharks Don’t always Bite”             So why are we so fearful??? Your students will be able to reach inside a (not so real) great white and find out what they do bite!  Lots of hands-on things to see, touch and do.

    “Snakes are not Scary”  Checkers, our live Okatie corn snake, will visit your classroom along with puppets, rubber snakes, snake skins, pictures, etc. to teach your students all about snakes. 

 “Fur bearers of South Carolina”   Touch and feel the pelts of SC’s fur bearing animals.  Students will match the fur to the animal, learn what they eat, who are their predators & where they are found while discovering the marvels of adaptations. See the  new beaver pelt we added to the collection this year! 

  “Soil Tunnel” This “tunnel” allows your students to crawl thru “the earth” via a model of a soil profile and explore root systems, foods that grow underground, decomposers and other animals in the soil.

  Students waiting their turn to go through the tunnel will participate in 2 other stations; investigating soils and observing earthworms. Pre K—2nd grades.

Educators bring large tubs with display items, models, pictures, etc supporting program content.

Most items can be handled safely by students.
